Rousing up some motivation to get to the gym can be tough. There are so many factors, like being tired, having a
lot of things to do, getting home late, and not getting up in time. The list can go on.
I used to have a long pre workout regimen that
was terribly complicated. My workout time was very early in the AM. I would get up an hour before I was going to leave just to eat something. The prevailing wisdom at the time was that you did not want food in your stomach while working out, but you needed to have nutrients available for the workout.
If I did not get up early enough, I sometimes would not go. I thought I was doing irreparable harm to my body by not doing my pre workout routine. Now I know that was foolish. I now use a pre workout supplement, and I am getting great results.
My goals do change. Sometimes I am leaning out, while other times I am trying to put on
muscle. I have tried quite a few different schemes for pre workout. The best thing I have found so far is taking a pre workout supplement
with nitric oxide
. Nitric oxide increases blood flow in the body by stopping the veins from constricting. This helps blood flow freely to the muscles. The great part about it is that I can use it for both phases.
In the leaning out phase, I am getting less calories, so the nitric
oxide gives me the extra energy that I would normally get from food. It used to be a chore to finish my workout, especially the cardio, but the supplement helps me get through my workout.
When I am trying to put on some muscle, it helps give me the extra push necessary to get a few more reps in. Putting on muscle is all about pushing the body to do more each workout. Plus, I leave the gym feeling like I can do more.
Nitric oxide is
not a good post workout supplement
, though. For post workout, I prefer a protein shake when I am adding mass, or branched-chain amino acids when I am in a fat-loss stage. Muscles need nutrients right away to start repairing the damage done during the workout. This is one bodybuilding tenet I still do believe in.
